How to Protect Aluminium Against Salt Spray and Island Humidity
Menorca has more than 200 kilometres of coastline, meaning that a large proportion of its properties are exposed to marine spray and environmental salinity. Although aluminium is the most durable material for exteriors, proper maintenance ensures that your windows and shutters remain in pristine condition for decades.
1. Regular Cleaning of Aluminium Profiles
Marine aerosol deposits a thin layer of salt on window and shutter profiles.
- Recommended Frequency: Every 3 months in coastal areas (Addaia, Fornells, Binibèc) and every 6 months inland (Sant Lluís, Alaior).
- Procedure: Wash surfaces with warm water and neutral soap using a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive scourers, solvents or acidic detergents.
2. Lubrication of Hardware and Opening Mechanisms
Compass hinges, Menorcan shutter hinges and espagnolette bolts should be lubricated with silicone spray or dry PTFE lubricant. Avoid heavy greases that can attract dust and sand.
3. Clearing Drainage Channels
Check that the drainage slots at the bottom of the outer frame are clear of dirt so that rainwater drains away quickly.
